Frequently Asked Questions

Doesn't being a pastor violate the separation of church and state?
No, because "separation of church and state" is not in the constitution. Originally, this phrase came from a quote by Thomas Jefferson in an 1802 letter to the Danbury Baptist Association in Connecticut and was later published in a Massachusetts newspaper. The Danbury Baptists wrote Thomas Jefferson expressing their concern that the government might try to regulate their religious expression. In response, Jefferson wrote his now famous letter, using the phrase “Separation of Church and State” to reassure the Danbury Baptists that the First Amendment prohibited the government from trying to control religious expression. In short, the First Amendment was intended to keep government out of regulating religion, but it did not keep religion out of government or the public square.

What does a commissioner do?
Commissioners are the counties' chief elected officials, are ultimately responsible for the fiscal operations and policy decisions affecting county government. Additional duties include municipal tax abatement appeals and hearings on maintenance of town roads.

What towns do you represent in your district?
I represent the people of District 1, which includes North Berwick, Berwick, South Berwick, Lebanon, Acton, Newfield, Parsonsfield, Limerick, Limington and Cornish.  There are 4 other districts in York County.

Why do you want to be  a County Commissioner?
After hearing Franklin Graham speak at the Capitol building during his Decision America Tour in 2016, I took his encouraging words to heart.  He called for Christians to get involved in their community and run for public office.  My wife and I became members of the Acton Republican Committee and as delegates, went to our first Republican Convention in 2016.  Then we started attending the York County Republican meetings and met lots of interesting people and learned many new things. This year I was asked to consider running for County Commissioner.  I consider this to be a great privilege and hope to be able to serve the people in my community and  represent them fairly and honestly.

What are your political views?
I am a Conservative, fiscally and socially.  I believe in being a good steward of the budget oversight entrusted to me.  Even though a commissioner may not deal with social issues, I do believe in the sanctity of life and God's design for marriage.   I believe the Bible tells me to love God and to love others. For me, one way I can show love to others is by public service to the people of York County. I strive to live my life with integrity and honesty and if elected, I will continue to do that and will work diligently in the office of County Commissioner.
